WHAT IS THE BIG SECRET?
Is there a big secret about projected virtual backgrounds? What is it?
Yes! The truth is, most professional photographers don’t know much of anything about projected virtual backgrounds and how powerful and creative, sales and marketing tool it really is. They also don’t know how it differs from green screen and why it is so much better.
Green screen is pretty cool and it is cheap but it has many issues compared with projected backgrounds. With green screen it takes far more time to do the work and you have to paste in the backgrounds after the subject leaves.
With projected virtual backgrounds, you look into the camera and see both the subject and background live, you make adjustments in posing and props and you can see the end result instantly. It is an amazing process. Most photographers just don’t know much about it.
It is also a secret because many of the most successful users of projected backgrounds kept their use of the tool secret from other photographers. They liked being the only one in the area that used it which was a huge marketing advantage for them. And many photographers think that projected virtual backgrounds are too expensive. It doesn’t have to be expensive at all.

WHAT VIRTUAL BACKGROUNDS DID FOR ME
Williamstown Kentucky mother of 4, Cindy Barclay, had her heart set on becoming a professional photographer, starting out with a Nikon N90 film camera to photograph her high school senior daughter which soon turned into a little business. She set up a temporary studio in her family room. She joined KPPA and learned that she did not really know much so she began her education and changed to a Fuji S1 digital camera.
Wanting to be special in every way, she planned to buy a green screen system until she discovered virtual projected backgrounds at WPPI and was blown away, “I thought this was the best thing since sliced bread and realized I could never produce the same quality with green screen. I looked at the VB web site every day for months. This was Hollywood style photography. Then I attended a Don Blair WPPI program on virtual backgrounds with more than a thousand photographers. I finally got a system and the very first day I had it, I was producing good images right out of the box. I couldn’t believe it.”
"I sent a couple of my pictures to VB founder, Henry Oles, and he called me and praised my results and suggested that I become a featured photographer in his book, Background Power! along with a host of big name photographers who used the Scene Machine system. I was thrilled.”
“If it wasn’t for the Scene Machine I don’t think I would have survived. Almost instantly, It helped my struggling business. It transformed my studio into the production of high quality images with unlimited possibilities. My clients loved it.”
“My first big push was using VB to attract seniors and I expanded from there, even doing what is today called hybrid photography but unlike others, I combine video and stills with projected backgrounds. It is so important, especially today, to create images that can’t be done by friends or a mom. You have to show them the difference in true professional photography. You have to be clearly different. Having a studio is still a vital component of being a professional and being different from the part time outdoor enthusiast photographer. Virtual backgrounds is a key. Photographers have to educate themselves and their customers if they want to be successful. Education and virtual backgrounds has been my key. With VB, I just tried it and it worked as I fiddled around with it but then I went on to learn so much more.”
Cindy’s photography studio is now located in Louisville Kentucky and is combined with her husband Clay’s Cyber Acoustic Lab, a sound recording studio.
