A LOOK TOWARDS THE FUTURE FOR  PROFESSIONAL
 PHOTOGRAPHY

Professional photography around the world has been devastated over the past decade. Thousands of studios have closed just in the USA.  Nearly everyone, suppliers and photographers are down.  It is universally believed that the root cause of the devastation is the digital revolution which put digital cameras in the hands of everyone enabling them to produce quality images.  The public loves DIY. But is there more to the story?

Digital is not the sole cause of the devastation.  The real problem which has made the Perfect Storm far worse has been the reaction of many photographers to the new technology.  Instead of developing and emphasizing new products that are beyond the reach of the DIY and the tons of new part time professionals, most photographers went the other way…becoming more amateur like. They closed their studios.  They let their quality slip.  Lighting became flash on camera.  Posing became "do something and say cheese".  The purchase of new technology dried-up.  Product became a disk with dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of snap shots.  The clear distinction between amateur and professional disappeared and as a result the public no longer had a need to hire a professional and in time the public began to forget what quality professional work was like. To often snapshots have become the standard.

The primary hope for the future of the proud profession is a concentrated return to the fundamental principles that made us special by providing the client a unique experience while producing highly desirable timeless products that the public finds desirable and purchase.

Each serious professional must concentrate on developing the characteristics that are over and above anything the DIY public can do on their own.

  1. HAVE A PROFESSIONAL STUDIO CAMERA ROOM.  Amateurs don't have studios.  A studio can be set up nearly anywhere.  Having a studio makes you different.
  2. HAVE PROFESSIONAL LIGHTING EQUIPMENT.  Amateurs don't have professional lighting and don’t' know how to use it.
  3. DEVELOP PROFESSIONAL POSING SKILLS.  Amateurs usually do a lousy job of posing.
  4. HAVE A WIDE VARIETY OF PROPS.  Amateurs don’t usually think of using props.
  5. HAVE AND USE A PROJECTED VIRTUAL BACKGROUND SYSTEM TO PRODUCE HOLLYWOOD TYPE IMAGES.  Amateurs don't have a virtual background system. Backgrounds can play a very important role in adding to your creativity and variety.
  6. DEVELOP AN ARRAY OF LARGE DISPLAY PRINTS THAT YOU CAN USE TO CLEARLY SHOW WHAT YOU CAN DO.  Amateurs usually show 4 x 5 prints.
  7. DEMONSTRATE YOUR PROFESSIONALISM WITH PRINT AWARDS AND DEGREES.
  8. WORK WITH YOUR GUILDS AND ASSOCIATIONS TO ACTIVELY PROMOTE TRUE PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY

While we can never reverse the digital revolution, we can upgrade our methods to again capture the attention of the public.  Fundamentally people want to look the best they can possibly look. Therefore, why would they not want to select a photographer who can make them look their very best?  The future does not have to be doom and gloom or working for peanuts.  There are those who are able to generate a very significant bottom line.  You can control your future.  It is bright for those who concentrate on producing unique high quality work and provide clients a total experience that they cannot get anywhere else.  Imaging USA was a perfect example of the new direction that professional photography is taking.  11,000 photographers came to learn how to enrich their offerings and grow profits.  It is a great sign for the future.

There was no way to stop the coming of the digital revolution.  But it is within our power to react appropriately for maximum return.

BUSINESS RE-INVENTION-A
NEW YEARS RESOLUTION

What are you going to do different in 2016 compared with 2015?  If it is more of the same as 2015 and it hasn't worked as well as you would like or if it is downright failing, then doing it again isn't going to work again.  The old common definition of insane is doing the same things over and over and expecting a different result.  It won't happen.

Generally, the only photographers who will report that they are doing well are mostly part time newcomers who really aren't expecting much.  They have no concept of what photography use to be like, what it could be like, and what it is like for some.  If no one is making much money and if there are no new ideas to try, then there really is no course forward.  But if some photographers are doing great, really great, then they are demonstrating what things can be like if you were to follow their lead.

Ask yourself, "What am I going to do different in 2016?"   It's in your hands.  Both success and failure are options.
