HOW TO IMPROVE GREEN SCREEN PERFORMANCE
Most professional photographers have used green screen to create backgrounds but they also quickly discover the many frustrating issues that come with using it. Mission Texas photographer, Alexander Walter Austin, has been a long time user of the Scene Machine projected virtual background process but he now also uses his background projection system to project chromakey colors on his 12 x 10 foot screen for green screen or blue screen and gets dramatically improved results. Plus he can change the color of the background in seconds depending on the colors the subject is wearing. With this method, he can work in a much smaller space and work without color contamination and he doesn’t get the frustrating green fringe around the subject especially in the hair.
In Austin's own words… “Virtual backgrounds with Chromakey is the way to go if you want to be professional and clearly different from your competition. I don’t have to go outside and work in the Texas heat and wind and still have limited backgrounds. With virtual, I have unlimited backgrounds but with much better results than what other photographers get with plain green screen. The process lets me concentrate on much better posing and lighting and getting that just perfect look that you might get outdoors only by accident."
“Some of my customers want to go outside but when I show them what I can do in the studio with my system, they almost always prefer the studio. Do you know what Texas heat does to a woman’s makeup and how the wind blows the hair and the sun causes squinting and uncomplimentary lighting. I don’t have to worry about all of that."
“I don’t have to take hundreds of shots hoping for a good one like most photographers do. I can take far fewer and make sure I get a totally professional look. In just minutes I can give my clients many different looks. My competition doesn’t even have studios…they just go outside and shoot and shoot just like any amateur. I give my customers a totally different and professional experience.”
"The Scene Machine is such a great tool…it was my best investment. It is what keeps me in business. With my style of photography, I sell a lot of wall enlargements up to 30 x 40 inches. Other photographers sell little books of snapshots that mostly look all the same and are not worth enlarging. I am able to deliver a totally professional product. All these new photographers just work outside just like amateurs. They don’t even realize how much better a job I can do working in my studio with unlimited virtual backgrounds. I shoot with my 35 to 350 Canon lens which lets me do so many different things. People just have to see my work and know that it was created in the comfort of my studio and they hire me. They tell me, why should we go outside when we can do a better job in your studio? I am able to achieve consistency, 24/7. I never get rained out. And it never gets dark in my studio. I control my environment.”
"I may well be about the only Scene Machine user who uses the machine for improving green screen results but that is ok with me. I don’t like to be stuck in a box. If there is a better way to do something, I do it and that is why I am still in business and even selling big prints. My customers appreciate the special way I work and my results prove it. Regular studio photography is so boring but not with my methods. I have the best of both worlds…working in the studio but having unlimited creative variety in backgrounds. I can take my time to make my subjects look their absolute best. What I do is really special that no one else does and my customers appreciate it. My virtual background system just keeps going and going and I continue to come up with new backgrounds to keep up with my customer’s desires. I even do groups with my system."
"I have my studio and my virtual background system. I am inside and making money. Why would I want to go outside? Man oh man. The system has really kept me in business. People see my web site and go wow. I always want to do what others cannot do. I’m happy. This is the way to go."

VB FOUNDER HOLDS US PATENT ON CHROMAKEY COLOR REPLACEMENT
Dr. Henry Oles, founder and president of Virtual Backgrounds holds a US patent on projecting colors with retroreflective screen technology to enhance Chromakey (green screen or blue screen) The patent was awarded in 1999 and reflects the many advantages that come with using background projection techniques to improve green screen or blue screen. Alexander W. Austin’s work described in this month’s lead article demonstrates the value of this process to improve his Chromakey backgrounds.

ADVANTAGES OF SCENE MACHINE MINI
ENHANCING THE CUSTOMER'S EXPERIENCE TO ENHANCE
YOUR RETURN ON INVESTMENT
It is critically important that anyone in business needs to find ways to enhance their customer’s experience in order to enhance their own return on investment…in other words, PROFIT. Imagine, as an example, if you as a professional photographer arrived to photograph a client with a cell phone camera. Maybe you would have gotten good photographs but the client would be thinking you were terribly unprofessional and no different from them doing it themselves. They expected more and are unhappy when they don’t get it.
This is why it is so critical for a professional photographer today to provide the customer with a totally professional experience by using obviously professional equipment and acting in every way professionally. This is where having an official studio, even if the studio is in a neat garage or unused bedroom. It has to look special. This is where using virtual projected backgrounds is so important. It’s like magic…a technique others cannot do. This is where it is so important to act professional in every respect as you perform your services. It is so critical that the client be impressed with the entire process and walk away excited about the total experience... Otherwise, why did they hire you? What did you really bring to the table that they could not do themselves? Simply put yourself in the customer’s position.
COST IS NO LONGER AN ISSUE
Admittedly, virtual backgrounds have been an expensive component for the photographer even though it can be shown that it can quickly pay for itself in new business. But today, that isn’t so much the case. The cost of a system can be affordable for nearly everyone. The new Scene Machine MINI is only $1995…thousands less than its big brother.
But if the photographer is really struggling, the company has refurbished models that use slides to create the backgrounds and these machines are available for as little as $650. The slide based projectors create exciting results. Backgrounds can be captured as digital files and sent to a lab that turns them into a slide that in some ways is easier to use than a digital system. Refurbished and demo backgrounds screens are also available at a considerable savings. Most photographers who don’t have a system blame the high cost as their reason for not having it but in reality it’s just an excuse.
