THE RESURRECTION OF QUALITY
PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
Quality portrait photography, as professional photographers have known and produced it for years seemed to dry up and die with the coming of the digital revolution…far more so than predicted by Henry Oles in his publication, The Professional Photographer’s Perfect Storm.
Click to download the publication "The Perfect Storm"
There is a whole generation of people coming along who only know snapshot photography, whether it was done by amateurs or the new "click happy" professionals. Even the Walmart and K Mart Studios along with Olan Mills have disappeared leaving a huge vacancy. But, now, finally, there is a new interest in what has been called timeless imaging made by well trained creative professional photographers. While professional photography will never be again as it was before the digital revolution there is a developing need for having truly professional images produced that can be enlarged, framed, and treasured not for a few seconds but for a lifetime and beyond.
There is so much more that the true professional can create when working in a studio with the proper equipment to produce timeless photography that is clearly different from anything that can be done by the snapshot crowd. . Virtual projected backgrounds will continue to turn the studio into a world of complementary and often meaningful backgrounds instantly available and totally under the control of the photographer. It’s "Hollywood type" photography. It is a resurrection of a product that never completely died and a glorious opportunity for those who can take advantage of it.

RUDI DIAZ IS GETTING READY FOR THE RESURRECTION
California professional photographer, Rudi Diaz sees a transformation coming in professional photography going from a decade of post digital revolution back to more formalized portraiture that can only be produced by a trained and creative professional. Instead of candid snapshots, attention is starting to return to the fundamental basics of quality portraiture including enhancing lighting, quality posing, and complementary backgrounds whether the work is done on location or in a studio environment.
Quoting Rudi, “Today, to coin a phrase, "snapshot portraiture" while at times can express the warmth it thoroughly lacks the depth, breadth and professionalism of formal portraiture. When people visit other people’s homes they generally walk past the framed snapshots but stop to admire the formal portrait and it behooves us as professional photographers to make sure our work embodies those qualities and market the fact that it does. It is an interesting thing that the current digital generation that created snapshot portraiture always tends to take a giant step backward when whatever they have brought to the forefront becomes mainstream and they do so by going retro. And it is entirely in the hands of the professional photographers to dictate exactly where their feet should land when they take that giant step back into the world of formal portraiture. The subjects may well be filled with piercings and covered with tats but they will happily immortalize that look on a framed canvas proudly hanging in their crib (home) for all their cool friends to stop and admire."
Rudi obviously sees the resurrection coming and is getting ready to be a leader and capitalize on it before many others jump in. It is kind of like the stock market. The best time to buy is when a stock is low and expected to go up to get the maximum gains.

VINYL RECORDS ARE MAKING A COMEBACK
NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE THAT WILL APPLY TO PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Rudi Diaz sent us a link to this recent NY Times article that discusses the very strong and completely unexpected return to purchases of vinyl records instead of compact disks and USB recordings. The record industry had just about completely died when the new generation recognized that there was a special sound quality that came only from vinyl and could not be reproduced digitally.

Quoting the NY Times article, “There were always record collectors who disdained the compact disk, arguing that an LPs grooves yielded warmth and depth that the CD's digital code could not match.” Continuing, “We never expected the vinyl resurgence to become as crazy as it is,” he said. “But it’s come full circle. We get kids calling us up and telling us why they listen to vinyl and when we ask them why they don’t listen to CDs they say, “CDs .. My dad listens to CDs. Why would I do that??
There is every reason to believe that this same thinking is coming right now to professional portraiture.

4. Invest in the basic equipment including lighting, props, and a background system

MARKETING FORMAL PORTRAITURE
A resurrection of interest in formal portraiture will happen only if it is properly marketed.
The public has become so use to snapshot portraits that they see that style as normal and good enough. It is only when the public actually sees truly professional formal portraits that they come to realize that there really is a difference…a very significant difference. This will require serious marketing efforts by photographers like Rudi Diaz to acquaint the public with quality timeless images.
While formal traditional portraiture with traditional canvas backgrounds will always have a place, today’s technology with virtual backgrounds enables the photographer to provide so much more variety than just the traditional canvas. A sitting can include a wide variety of backgrounds to create many different looks. More variety generates more customer satisfaction and higher sales.

DOUG GORDON COMING OUT WITH NEW BOOK ON FLOW POSING

World famous photographer Doug Gordon of New York is publishing a new book in February on Flow Posing.
Creating flattering poses for portrait and wedding clients is key to success as a professional photographer, but it can be difficult to quickly move through a series of poses that results in flattering images and a wide variety of portrait looks. In this book, posing guru Doug Gordon (of Long Island, NY) distills his popular flow posing techniques to show readers how to establish a basic standing portrait pose that is perfectly suited to traditional/classic portrait looks, then fluidly progress through a series of minor posing adjustments, framing changes, and camera angles to build a cache of over fifty client-pleasing poses suitable for a wide range of clients and locations.

NEW OFFERING AT PHOTOKINA
IN GERMANY
IN GERMANY
The world’s fair of photography happens in Cologne Germany this week bringing together over 150,000 photographers and others related to the photo industry. This year a new division of Photokina will be born. It is known as Dignity. Its primary aim is bringing virtual and augmented reality to imaging.
Very interesting but this is exactly what Virtual Backgrounds has been doing since long before digital existed. Digital just makes what we do easier and more flexible and more instantaneous. Our specialty is augmenting photography with virtual backgrounds which greatly broadens the creativity of the professional photographer, enabling them to offer products that the public cannot do on their own. Virtual image augmentation puts a Hollywood flair on to the work the professional photographer can offer the public right in their own studio environment, even if the studio is a portable operation.
Maybe the new subtitle for Virtual Backgrounds should be, Virtual Image Augmentation!
